Field of interest: Aquatic Microbial Ecology
Activities: Niko performed her Master Project in cooperation with the University of Zurich at the MEG between 2016 and 2017. Her project was dedicated to the identification of bacteria associated with various rotifer species. Firstly, different rotifers were cultured in the laboratory and identified based on i) morphological traits and ii) barcoding of the COI and the 18S rDNA gene. Then the microbiome associated with the rotifers and in their surrounding water will be identified by Illumina sequencing of the 16S rDNA. Moreover, culture conditions, e.g. temperature or food source, have been modulated to evaluate the stability of the rotifer microbiome and to identify a potential ‘core microbiome’ of the different host species. Niko is currently a PhD student at the University of Namur (Belgium).
Methods: Cultivation of bacteria and zooplankton, experiments, microscopy, PCR methods, flow cytometry.
